July 31 Meet the Writers

You can support our programs for our musical theatre writers at https://donorbox.org/rhinebeck-donate-now Join Founding Executive Director Kathy Evans and meet seven of this summer’s award-winning musical theatre writers who will share three musicals they developed during their week at Rhinebeck Writers Retreat, plus a few songs. You’ll be among the first to hear about THE LESSON, by Avi Amon, Ty Defoe, & Nolan Dolan; THAT’S ALL FOLKS! by Noel Carey and Scott Weinstein; and MEXODUS by Brian Quijada and Nygel D. Robinson. Bios on website at www.rhinebeckwriters.org. ***** Avi Amon, Ty Defoe, Nolan Doran, THE LESSON Synopsis: “In order to know anything, we must relearn everything…” THE LESSON is a fantastical queer reimagining of two of history’s most-loved musical titans: A revolutionary Beethoven and an established Mozart, whose paths and hearts collide in an alt-universe, futuristic Vienna. A hybrid of theater, film, concert, and dance party, THE LESSON is a meditation on the purpose of artistic expression, the control of ideas and information by the government, and the influence of family on who we are. It’s a lesson that will change their lives, and the world, forever. ****** Noel Carey & Scott Weinstein, THAT’S ALL FOLKS! Synopsis: It’s been two years since animator Mel Mars sold off his most famous cartoon character, Sly Fox. Late one night, as Mel struggles to come up with the next big idea to revitalize his flailing career, he’s interrupted by an improbable visit from his old animated friend. What started as a one-man work session devolves into a two-handed bender as the pint-sized, cartoon miscreant forces Mel to reckon with his past. Blending live theatre and animation, THAT’S ALL FOLKS! is a new musical comedy about loss and creation, childhood and death, and the healing power of art. ****** Brian Quijada & Nygel D. Robinson, MEXODUS Synopsis: Inspired by the estimated 4,000-10,000 enslaved people in the Southern part of the United States who pursued their journey to freedom into Mexico instead of looking North, this under told chapter of the Underground Railroad is an exploration of Black and brown bodies standing together against oppression, and a unique take on the American border story. ***** Lead Supporter for THE LESSON: Alex Robertson Underwriting Supporters for THAT'S ALL FOLKS!: Paul Feuerman and Bruce Grivetti Lead Supporters for MEXODUS: Rick Farrar and Jeff Zadroga Our programs are made possible in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. Live stream produced by Adam Lenson Productions.

The show was featured in New York Theatre Barn’s New Works Series earlier this year. JoAnn M. Hunter (School of Rock, Harmony) will mentor Brown, Denis Jones (Tootsie, Honeymoon in Vegas) will mentor Liu, and Lorin Latarro (Mrs. Doubtfire, Waitress) will mentor Natalio. New York Theatre Barn's New Works Series LIVE / 2.3.21

Now in its 14th season, New York Theatre Barn's New Works Series presents exclusive “pre-premieres” of new musicals in the early stages of development. New York Theatre Barn is keeping original live theatre alive during this unprecedented time. From our homes to yours, we are excited to share and experience the magic of live theatre in development. This installment will be a 1-hour virtual live stream which will include excerpts from two new musicals: THE LESSON (by Avi Amon, Nolan Doran and Ty Defoe) - The Lesson is a fantastical reimagining of a chance encounter between a revolutionary Beethoven and a more-established Mozart, whose worlds - and hearts - collide in Vienna in 1787. The show is set in an alternate universe that melds the future and past into an entirely new, queer, fun, and political space. A hybrid of theater, film, concert, and dance party, The Lesson is a meditation on the purpose of artistic expression, the influence of family on who we are, and the control of information and ideas by the government. NOTHING TO SEE HERE (by Bryan Blaskie and Laurie Hochman) - In the summer of 1925, the struggling town of Dayton, Tennessee hosted a trial that claimed national headlines and divided the country — the Scopes Monkey Trial, the first major anti-Evolution court case. Nothing to See Here is the story of Frank Robinson, the man who built the trial as a publicity stunt for his town, and May Robinson, his wife who longs to save her family from falling apart in a seemingly Godless town. Of course, notorious reporter H.L. Mencken is there to spin their story — and to uncover what the truth behind the trial really is.
